A Taste of Rural Spain: Yoga, Connection, and Life on the Farm

Nestled in the picturesque countryside of Extremadura, Spain, the Pure Light Yoga Retreat at La Posada del Agua offered a sanctuary for those seeking rest, rejuvenation, and a deeper connection with nature. Hosted by Emily, the retreat in September provided an immersive experience blending yoga, farm life, and home cooking.

A Warm Welcome to La Posada del Agua

From the moment I arrived, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Ewan and Jose greeted us with open arms, and the beauty of the working farm instantly transported me to a slower, more grounded pace of life. Located in Calera De Leon, this retreat offered a true escape—a place to unplug with no WiFi (though strong 4G and 5G signals were available).

The accommodations were charmingly rustic. I stayed in the main house, where three cozy bedrooms each hosted two guests. For those seeking a more intimate setting, a traditional chozo (shepherd's hut) nestled among the trees offered a unique and private space. Although the accommodation was shared, there were plenty of bathrooms and quiet spaces that offered privacy when needed. With a small group of only eight of us, the retreat fostered genuine connection and personal reflection.

The farmhouse itself has been lovingly restored with care and attention to detail. Throughout the home, there are personal touches from Ewan and Jose's life and travels together - each room telling a story. Sharing their home felt like an extension of their hospitality and created a truly special experience.

A Daily Rhythm of Mindfulness

Each day began with morning yoga on a wooden platform perched on the hillside. Practicing above the clouds was a magical experience, as the early light painted the sky and the world seemed to stretch endlessly below us. On cooler days or during restorative sessions, we gathered inside by the roaring fire, feeling the warmth seep into our bodies as we moved gently and mindfully.

Emily led three yoga sessions a day - morning, pre-lunch, and evening, each offering a blend of invigorating flows and soothing restorative poses. Her thoughtful instruction, combined with the natural beauty surrounding us, created an atmosphere of profound presence. Occasionally, we opted for silent dinners, allowing us to deepen our ability to communicate without words and enhance our inner awareness.

Beyond the yoga mat, the retreat offered countless opportunities for exploration and connection. Afternoons were often spent lounging in the plunge pool, soaking up the last of the September sun—a luxury knowing autumn's chill had already settled back home in England. The farm itself was an abundant landscape, home to olive, fig, and walnut trees, inviting us to wander and forage for fresh delights.

Crafting, Journaling, and Animal Connection

A highlight for me was the hands-on workshops with Ewan and Jose. They distill their own essential oils on the farm, and we had the opportunity to use these beautifully fragrant oils to craft our own candles. The process was both meditative and creative, leaving us with a tangible reminder of our time at the retreat.

Emily also provided a carefully curated collection of books on yoga and wellness. These sparked deep conversations and moments of introspection. Journaling became a cherished ritual, allowing me to capture insights and reflections throughout the retreat.

The farm was alive with animal companions. Playful dogs, curious kittens, and an array of birds—including the majestic peacocks—offered endless opportunities for connection and delight. Their gentle presence added a layer of warmth and joy to our days.

Savouring Organic, Locally-Sourced Cuisine

Mealtimes were a celebration of fresh, organic ingredients sourced directly from the farm and the surrounding region. Breakfast quickly became a favourite ritual, especially the pan con tomate sprinkled with homegrown oregano - a simple yet incredibly flavourful delight.

Lunch was a hearty affair, featuring dishes like lentils, pisto, and creamy risotto, accompanied by homemade bread and vibrant salads. In the evenings, we enjoyed lighter fare, including Spanish tortilla, fresh vegetables, and home made dips. Throughout the day, we indulged in fruits, snacks, and regional wines—red, white, and cava—offering a taste of the land's generosity.

A Space for Reflection and Connection

The retreat was more than just a place to practice yoga - it was a holistic experience that nourished body, mind, and spirit. Whether I was journaling in a quiet corner or sharing laughter with new friends, each moment felt infused with intention.

Evenings often concluded with reflective practices, allowing us to integrate the day's experiences. The combination of movement, stillness, and community created a profound sense of balance and renewal.

Looking Ahead

As I left La Posada del Agua, I carried with me not only the handcrafted candle but also a renewed sense of peace and presence. The Pure Light Yoga Retreat was a transformative journey - a reminder of the beauty in slowing down and the power of mindful connection.

With the next retreat scheduled for Spring 2025, the opportunity to return to this magical place feels like an invitation to continue the journey. If you're seeking a space to unwind, reconnect, and embrace the rhythms of nature, I can't recommend the Pure Light Yoga Retreat enough—it's a truly life-affirming experience.
