Marmas are sensitive points on the body where there is a very direct connection between consciousness and physiology (mind and body). They are sometimes confused with the chakras, but chakras are energy centres located on the spine, and the points on the skin are actually marmas.

Ayurveda recognises 108 marma points on the body, and these are connected via channels known as nadis. 'Nada' means sound, so these are channels of sound or vibration through which prana, the subtle life force, travels to and from different parts of the body.

These marma points can be treated using gentle touch with blends of essential oils. The treatment can be for simple relaxation, but it has application for a range of conditions that sit between mind and body, ranging from stress-related back pain and tension to helping deal with grief and existential fear.

At the presentation you will have a chance to sample the oils, and Jonathan will explain the theory and practice of marma therapy. Anyone who wants will be able to have a short 2-3 minute taster session.

Calming and soothing

It felt like a gentle massage with very light strokes. The feathery touch was extremely calming and soothing. During the whole session, aromatherapy, massage and marma therapy worked seamlessly together. I could feel the energy flowing again inside my body – tension released and blockages removed. Where the marma points were touched, there were sensations on different parts of my body. It was as if the marma points were functioning as a network on the meridians of the physiology. At the end of the session, I felt very grounded, revitalized, and blissful, as if coming out of a very deep meditation. It was simply a beautiful experience!! I found myself beaming with joy for the rest of the day, and I had a very good sleep that evening.

Jonathan has a degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford. After graduating he became a meditation teacher (TM), a practice he has taught regularly since then. Through his studies and courses he has gained a reasonable working knowledge of Ayurveda.

In 2003 he became UK distributor for Oshadhi Essential oils, a brand set up by friend and mentor, Dr Malte Hozzel. He became a qualified aromatherapist, and a few years later met Dr Ernst Schrott. Ernst was a medical doctor, an ayurvedic physician and chairman of the German Ayurveda Academy, a homoeopath and a naturopath. He was, in short, an exceptionally knowledgeable ‘medicine man’ and healer with extraordinary abilities and insight.

Jonathan soon realised that marma therapy brings together so many different interesting strands. Marma is about consciousness, it’s from the ayurvedic tradition, it involves touch, and it uses essential oils. It has significance for the physical, emotional and spiritual levels of life, bringing together the physical with the energetic. Jonathan soon found that his experience of giving treatments became deeper, and he ended up working closely with Ernst and organising over 20 courses for Ernst in the UK and Europe, before Ernst passed away in October 2021. Jonathan continues teaching the practice he learned from Ernst.
